Literacy and Numeracy

Gaplink international (GLI) had a partnership programme where we participated and collaborated with UWEZO Kenya under the Women Educational Researchers of Kenya (WERK), we responsible for Nakuru County region and in respect to this during the launch of the findings; GLI was the host name for the whole Nakuru Region.

This is survey report on findings on learning assessment countywide for pupils aged 6-16 yrs assessed for basic literacy. The reports came out where the overviews of the process were findings, national report and a section of county reports.

Only 31 out of 100 children in class three can do class two work and 11 out of 100 children in class eight cannot do class two work. This is worrying and parents must take active role in educating their children and government must improve the quality of education said Izel Kipruto the Twaweza Communications manager during the launching of the report at Cool Rivers hotel in Nakuru.

Teacher absenteeism is high compared to that of pupils. The report indicates that ten out of hundred pupils missed school compared to 17 out of 100 teachers who missed school on the day Uwezo visited.
